About Silbinol®

Silbinol® is a trademark of Sabinsa Corporation for a standardized extract obtained from the heartwood and bark of Pterocarpus marsupium (Indian Kino) useful in maintaining healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels. More

Role in Maintaining Blood Sugar

The blood sugar lowering effects of Pterocarpus marsupium were well known in India long before pharmacological studies of the tree were undertaken. Diabetics in the rural areas of Chatisgarh (region of Madhya Pradesh) would drink water from tumblers carved from the wood of Pterocarpus marsupium or drink water in which a piece of the wood had been immersed, and they were said to feel better. Mechanism of Action

Comparative studies of (-)-epicatechin and insulin confirm the similarity between these two compounds. They both exert protective effects on human erythrocyte osmotic fragility, stimulate oxygen uptake in fat cells and tissue slices of various organs, increase the glycogen content in rat diaphragms while simultaneously increasing the glucose uptake, and inhibit theophylline induced lipolysis in isolated fat pads. Health Benefits

It was found during the Clinical Studies that the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction of an aqueous decoction of Pterocarpus marsupium's heartwood significantly reduced the serum cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, and VLDL of hyperlipidemic rats who received an oral dose of 120 mg/kg body weight. Significant reductions were also observed in rats that received the aqueous decoction (1 ml/kg body weight). More
